Column: The Shaping of Imagination

I watched fascinated as my daughter navigated her way towards the bowl with her spoon. She is 1 year old now and has been getting more assertive in her desire to feed herself. I was mesmerized (as most parents are with their children) as I watched as she dipped her spoon into the bowl, brought it back out, and brought the spoon delicately and carefully to her mouth. Although most of the food fell off of her spoon, I was fascinated to watch how she was learning to use this utensil. In several years-time the use of utensils will become second nature to her. In fact it will be so normal that she will not even think twice about it. It is difficult to imagine a time when such utensils did not exist. We have become so used to using such utensils—trained in their existence and use—that our imaginations have been shaped by their existence. more >>
