Challenging gender inequity in pursuit of women’s health

Dr Sarojini Nadar is a theologian and academic from South Africa working on the issues of gender, religion and health for many years. She is currently serving as senior lecturer and director of the Gender and Religion programme, School of Religion and Theology at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Nadar has been deeply involved with churches to raise awareness about women’s health in communities, challenging patriarchal values and working for gender justice.

Towards a world without gender justice

Nearly 50 delegates gathered at the Koinonia Conference Centre from 3 to 5 November for a three-day residential conference on Gender Justice, whose aim was to encourage member churches to actively participate in the16 Days of Activism Against Violence on Women Campaign.

MCC supports Congolese women calling for an end to the violence against women

In solidarity with thousands of women who have been sexually assaulted in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, five Mennonite Congolese women joined an international rally of women calling for peace, demilitarization and the end of violence against women.
Churches promote new images of masculinity in effort to stop violence against women

Christians involved in church-based gender justice movements say that men must develop a sense of positive masculinity in order to counter increasing levels of violence by men against women. Citing reports by the United Nations and human rights groups that the extent and type of violent attacks on women is escalating, representatives of global church organizations say initiatives aimed at changing male patterns of behaviour are urgently needed.

Gender-based violence threatens integrity of live and faith

On International Women's Day, 8 March, ecumenical leaders have urged churches to work to end violence against women in its many forms across the world. "Violence and fear of violence blights the lives of many girls and women around the world," said the Rev. Michael Wallace, the general secretary of the World Student Christian Federation (WSCF). "If churches believe that every person is made in the image of God then they must speak out about violence against women.
Multimedia study series on gender violence launched for Lent

Cries of Anguish; Stories of Hope - a series of online Lenten study resources on the struggle to end violence against women will be launched 15 February during a prayer service at the Ecumenical Centre in Geneva, Switzerland, which is home to a number of international church organizations including the World Council of Churches (WCC). The general secretary of the WCC, the Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, will participate and WCC programme executive for Women in Church and Society, Dr Fulata Mbano Moyo, will discuss biblical texts addressing violence against women.
