EHAIA, an African initiative going beyond Africa

The Ecumenical HIV and AIDS Initiative in Africa (EHAIA) has recently documented the impact it has achieved since 2002. While commemorating its 10th anniversary this year, EHAIA reflects on how churches have become “HIV-competent”, meaning they are well informed about HIV, are welcoming HIV positive people and are fighting against HIV and AIDS in Africa and beyond.

Nigerian women knit, stitch to self-sufficiency

To walk into Zipporah Moses’ tailoring shop is to enter a swirl of color and activity. Sewing machines hum while Moses and several of her helpers cut and baste the vibrantly patterned fabric used in traditional dress. They measure new customers and serve those who are picking up their orders. All within an 8-by-10 foot space on a busy thoroughfare in Jos, Nigeria.

SALTers learn from people they serve

Stephen Esaki, 27, dragged himself into his host family’s home in Tete, Mozambique. He was ready to jump onto the couch and kick back after building sand dams all day, but his host sister already had the couch occupied. This familiar situation reminded him of his high school years in Aapaa, Hawaii, when he would come home to find his own sister sprawled on the couch.

WCC general secretary calls for urgent action in the Horn of Africa

In comments to staff of the World Council of Churches (WCC) on 18 August, the Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit expressed alarm at the “blocking and hindering of the food supply in famine-struck Somalia, with the effect that more and more people are dying. This interference with humanitarian aid is inhumane and must be strongly condemned.”
