A Mthatha high school has again scooped a national award as the top performing mathematics and science school in the Eastern Cape.

St John’s College recently received the award from the National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF) in conjunction with the national Department of Basic Education as part of the Brilliants Programme-NSTF-BHP Billiton Awards.

The p rogramme recognises good performances by schools and pupils and nurtures "brilliant young people" by exposing them to the professional science and research environment.

St John’s College came tops in the Eastern Cape after the Basic Education Department identified top performing schools in each of the provinces.

Principal Zolisa Magaqa was delighted his school had won, saying his staff and pupils had worked hard.

"We are a team and do things as a team. The entire school community is happy with this achievement," Magaqa said.

Last year, the school obtained a 79percent pass rate in matric results in both maths and science. It had enrolled 549 Grade 12 pupils for maths and science.
