Last week, the South African Catholic Bishop’s Council released a statement deploring the country’s attempts to excuse or defend what the Church referred to as “bad moral behavior in the name of ‘culture,’” and encouraged leaders to “recommit themselves to being worthy role models for the youth and children of the nation.”
In his letter, Cardinal Wilfrid Napier, Archbishop of Durban, spoke for the rest of the Conference, expressing strong concern for the scandalous behavior exhibited by leaders who “shamefully flout the norms of morality and decency.” While the Church recognized President Zuma’s apology for participating in “unprotected sex,” the Archbishop expressed disappointment that Zuma does not show remorse for engaging in adultery once again. Additionally, the Council stated their frustration with the total disregard for sexual moral behavior and how it has hindered the country’s efforts to clip the HIV/AIDs epidemic.
With this in mind, the Council continues to call on the whole Church to live and obey the teachings of Jesus in order to create a more stable and healthy society by rejecting sexual immorality.
