You come into leadership at a difficult time in our country's history. You have seen the wanton violence of youth as they destroyed the inner-city of Johannesburg around Luthuli House.
You have heard a resurgent racial rhetoric in our country that once again threatens to divide us.
You have felt the rage of the poor and unemployed who feel they are not being heard by their local authorities.

The middle-aged mother sitting in front of me is a teacher. With a hint of embarrassment, her back straight-up, she slowly pushes her monthly pay-slip under my eyes.
Her shaking finger directs me to the section "after deductions". There is very little money there. With this paltry amount the teacher and mother supports three children at university.
She can barely afford the tuition and registration costs - let alone books, food and transport - for one of the children.
